Jeremy C. Martens is Associate Professor of History at The University of Western Australia. His research interests include governance in the British settler colonies; the evolution of immigration restriction legislation in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa; and race, gender and the law in nineteenth and twentieth century South Africa. He is author of Government House and Western Australian Society 1829-2010 (University of Western Australia Publishing, 2011), which was shortlisted for the 2011 Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards (WA History) and received a Special Commendation, 2012 Margaret Medcalf Award. He has published articles in Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History, Journal of Southern African Studies, New Zealand Journal of History, South African Historical Journal, Canadian Journal of African Studies and History of the Family.
